Real Madrid will meet Ajax in the Champions League on Wednesday night for a match that could see Vinicius going up against Matthijs de Ligt, the player who won the 2018 Golden Boy award ahead of him.
The prize is given out each year to the best player in Europe under the age of 21 and the Ajax defender took the honour last year.
He finished top of the rankings, with Trent Alexander-Arnold in second, Justin Kluivert in third, Patrick Cutrone in fourth and Vinicius in fifth.
“He’ll be the best centre-back in the world in a couple of years,” Holland coach Ronald Koeman confidently stated on Catalunya Radio.
This is the man Vinicius will set out to try to get the better of in Amsterdam on Wednesday evening.
It won’t be easy, as De Ligt is tall, strong and a complete player, one who can also pass and score and lead.
“He already has the physique of a 24-year-old,” Edwin Van der Sar told ESPN.
Even though he’s still only 19, De Ligt is an experienced player.
He became the youngest player to start a European final when he was in the line-up against Manchester United in the 2017 Europa League final at the age of 17 years and 285 days, and already he is the captain of his club.
As such, he’ll be the one to greet Sergio Ramos, a player he greatly admires, before this first leg, which kicks off at 21:00 CET on Wednesday.
