“I just want to go home.” Not what you would expect to hear from the mouth of Tiger Woods on the Friday afternoon of a major tournament, but those are the words the 43-year-old American uttered yesterday after missing the cut at the Open. He then gingerly walked off into the distance, headed for a private jet bound for Florida.

Woods’s one-under-par second round of 70 was a vast improvement on the horror show of Thursday, when he recorded a seven-over 78, but this still appeared a laborious and miserable experience for him.
