The Academy announces four Oscars that will be announced during breaks – Hypable

The Academy has decided on the four Oscars whose winners will not be televised later this month.

As previously announced, The Academy is looking to get the show under 3 hours in order to prevent people from getting too bored at home. That’s being accomplished by removing categories from the broadcast, and those categories are: Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Live-Action Short, and Best Makeup/Hairstyling. Those winners will be revealed during commercial breaks.

Also today The Academy revealed that all five nominees in the Best Original Song category will get live performances. This is significant, as it was previously reported that only two would get live performances.

The decision to hide categories from the live broadcast has been controversial. To ease concerns, The Academy says that viewers will get to see a shortened version of the acceptance speeches later in the show. If you can’t wait that long, we’re also learning today that the winners will be broadcast live online.

“Viewing patterns for the Academy Awards are changing quickly in our current multi-media world, and our show must also evolve to successfully continue promoting motion pictures to a worldwide audience,” Academy President John Bailey told members this afternoon. “This has been our core mission since we were established 91 years ago—and it is the same today.”

Bailey also said to expect 4 – 6 categories to be hidden behind commercial breaks every year.

The Oscars will not have a host following Kevin Hart’s sudden departure last month. Tune in for all the excitement (?) on February 24, and before then, check out all the nominees.
