Twenty-three-year-old Nathan MacKinnon, the first overall pick in the 2013 draft, has been an impact player since his rookie year but this season he has taken it to new heights, scoring 41 goals and 58 assists for 99 points during the regular season. However, his first postseason goal of the year was the biggest one he has scored to date when he snapped a laser beam over the outstretched glove of Calgary goalie Mike Smith in overtime on Saturday night to stun the Flames 3-2, and even the series. The venue now shifts to Colorado for a pivotal Game 3 on Monday night.

The NHL odds board is reflecting the Flames as anywhere between -120 and -125 road chalk heading into this one, and despite the fact that Calgary lost Game 2 as -215 home favorites, expect to see veteran Mike Smith back between the pipes. In fact, Smith was a shining star for the Flames in the loss, as was his counter-number Philipp Grubauer, with the goalies stopping 36 and 35 shots respectively. Monday night will be a true test for both teams as the Avs will try to build on the momentum of Game 2 while the Flames are bent on avenging the upset loss and moving back into the driver’s seat.

Let’s not let one win, cloud our judgment. Calgary has owned the Avs in recent memory, winning nine of the last 11 meetings between the two and have won four of their last five at the Pepsi Center, including their lone appearance this season back in October, when the Flames eked out a 3-2 win. Colorado is 2-6 in their last eight as home underdogs while the Flames are 21-12 (+9.2 units) in a road game where the total is six goals or more, and are 23-13 (+7.0 units) in revenge games.

Calgary enjoys the luxury of rolling four quality lines and that depth of talent has had proven to wear teams down. There’s a reason why the Flames were the second leading scoring team during the regular season, averaging 3.52 goals per game, and their 4-0 Game 1 victory was no fluke. Despite a game and gritty effort by the Avalanche in their 3-2 Game 2 win over the Flames, we see this Game 3 matchup as too pivotal for the Flames not to be laser focused in avenging their loss. Calgary allowed the Avs to get off 39 shots in Game 2 versus just 26 in Game 1, and there will be more attention paid to shutting down Colorado’s transition game on Monday night. The oddsmakers are giving us an opportunity to get the better team at a relatively small price, therefore, we will back the Flames in our NHL picks tonight.

Final Score: Flames 5 – Avalanche 2
